Burning Questions
"Taking Community to the Next Level." What does that mean, exactly?

The web is teeming with message boards. We have found precious few, however, that cater to adult sensibilities ... quality over quantity, substance over form, civility over contempt. When we built TN, we envisioned it as an internet haven, a message board for grownups. We define a "grownup" as anyone who lives by those concepts in their every day life, and remembers to carry them over when they venture onto the web.

So ... you're a bunch of elitist eggheads?

Some will probably think so. Others may find us a breath of fresh air. Maybe even an answer to some questions they have been asking themselves for years. Questions like, "Aren't there any forums that encourage open-mindedness over dogma? Humor over cynicism? Courtesy over confrontation?" (We hear some people actually talk that way.) Truthfully, if you find those questions elitist, snobbish or plain crazy, we understand. No hard feelings and we agree this is probably not the place for you. If, however, you appreciate and identify with the call we’re sounding … welcome home.

Do I have to pay?

You do not. We offer two tiers of membership--one is completely free, and lets you read, post, customize your profile, use PM's, create a personal photo album and more. The other is a paid subscription that gives you access to the full range of bells and whistles TN has to offer. The second option is entirely voluntary. For the complete rundown, click here.

If I do pay for a Premium Membership, does that means I can’t be banned?

Not exactly. Escaping the kind of behavior that gets people banned from other communities is one of the main reasons we created TN in the first place. We've chosen to provide an alternative; a haven for people who appreciate spirited, civil conversation, and may have despaired of ever finding it. If you choose to join us, whether as a Registered or Premium Member, please understand that you will be held, as we hold ourselves, to the same standards of conduct and respect you expect from guests you invite into your home.

Sounds good in theory. How exactly will you moderate?

Administrative actions will generally be handled in private. Our hope is to never have to suspend or ban anyone from our community, but we will be firm, and apply our standards to all members, be they community veterans or fresh off the boat. We reserve the right to take appropriate action against any member we determine either unwilling or unable to adapt to the standards we have set for the community.

If I get banned as a Premium Member, will I get my money back?

Members suspended for 30 days or more will not pay for that month. Members banned permanently will have their accounts closed and any remaining balance refunded (e.g., if you have paid for 3 months and are banned in month 1, we will refund the unused two months). That's the bad news. The good news is those individuals will never have to pay another dime to a bunch of elitist eggheads.

About the dark background--it just kills my eyes. What were you thinking?

We were thinking that the dark background, while beautiful to us, might kill some folks' eyes. So we built a light background option as well. At the bottom of any page on the site you will find a small dropdown box with the word "Skilltest" displayed. Click on the down arrow, select "Blackteal," and you can preview the light template. If you prefer it to the Skilltest template, you can select Blackteal as your default setting. In your User CP, click Edit Options. At the bottom, under Miscellaneous Options, you will find a dropdown box where you can set Blackteal as your default template.

I want to upload a special image from my computer to use as my 'avatar' (no offense - the ones you all have made available are the bomb). Is that okay?

We've reserved that right for our Premium Members. We just ask that they don't make it too 'special,' if you catch our drift. We want to give members as much freedom in participating here as possible, within the bounds of what's considered generally acceptable and humane conduct. One tip - our program will reduce large images so that they are no larger than 100x100 pixels. It will not 'increase' an image's size, so we'd recommend you not use images much smaller than 100x100 pixels in size. Also remember, square images tend to work better than rectangular, and to try and select images where it will still be clear what we're looking at when it's reduced in size.

Finally, if you have a really amazing or visually attractive image you think would make a great permanent TN avatar choice, post it up in the Gallery in our 'Create a TN Avatar' section. If we agree, we'll add it to our collection. It'll be your legacy and make you, like, timeless.

Pretty weak FAQ, fellas.
